Paula Ortíz

Paula Ortiz is a scriptwriter and film director. She has a PhD in History of Art as well as a degree in Spanish Philology, which she coursed at University of Zaragoza. She also studied a Master in Film & Television Writing at UAB in 2003. She was granted the prestigious FPU Scholarship by the Spanish Ministry of Education, which led her to work as an investigator and professor at the Film Studies Area of Zaragoza University’s Department of History of Art. Because of this work, she concluded her thesis ‘Film Screenplay: an update on its theoretical and practical basis’ in 2011. It was directed by Dr. Agustín Sánchez Vidal and graded Cum Laudem that same year. She has also studied Film Direction at the Department of Film & TV in the renowned Tisch School of the Arts at New York University (2006 and 2007), as well as some scriptwriting courses at UCLA (2008 and 2009).

In March 2012 her first feature film ‘De Tu Ventana a la Mía’ was released, produced by Amapola Films, Oria Films and Zentropa Spain, and starring Maribel Verdú. The movie has received several national and international awards and has achieved some commercial success. In December 2015 her next film ‘La Novia’ was launched. It was a free adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s ‘Bodas de Sangre’. It was produced by Get in the Picture Productions (Spain), Cinecromatix (Germany) y Mantar Films (Turkey). The preview took place at the 63rd Edition of San Sebastian Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim. It was the most nominated and awarded film at the 2016 Goya Awards, 2016 Feroz Awards, 2016 CEC Awards and 2016 Paramount Channel Awards, including Best Director, Best Film and Best Adapted Screenplay, among others. Both films have achieved great success in Spain and have been released in more than 20 countries.

She is currently working as a spot director for several renowned brands, both national and international, such as WOMAN SECRET, LOREAL, GNP, PIKOLIN, among others. She is also developing new film projects: ‘Barbazul’, based on the popular French tale gathered by Perrault, in a new international production by Morena Films and El Arte de la Entevista. It has been written in collaboration with Juan Mayorga, who authored the play on which the film is based. She will soon be directing the TV miniseries ‘La Virgen Roja’, produced by AVALON and based on the story by Hildegart Rodriguez. The film is an account on one of the most relevant episodes in Spanish History, regarding one of its most enigmatic feminist characters. At the same time, she is starting the development of two TV and film projects with Apache Films.
Apart from her work as a director, she has also worked extensively as a professor and investigator. She is currently serving as a visiting professor for the Media Communication Degree at the University of Barcelona. Furthermore, she regularly collaborates with other Universities such as UCM, UAB, ECAM (Escuela de Cine y Audiovisuales de Madrid) ESCAC, TAI (Escuela Universitaria de Artes Escénicas y Visuales de la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos), San Pablo CEU University, Autonomous University of Madrid, University of Navarra, USJ (Universidad San Jorge), as well as the Film Professorship at the University of Valladolid. She has also given workshops at foreign universities such as James Madison University (Virginia, USA), La Sorbonne (Paris, France), Trinity College (Dublin, Ireland) or Oxford University (Oxford, United Kingdom), among others.

She is a member of the Directive Board of CIMA (Spanish Female Filmmakers Association) and serves as Vice Presidente EWA NETWORK (European Women Audiovisual Network).
